Adjectives of Number (Numeral Adjectives)
Adjectives of number show how many persons or things are meant. They may also express in what order a person or thing stands. Examples are: five, ten, one, first, last, few, some, all etc.
- We bought some oranges.
- Each hand has five fingers.
- Sunday is the first day of the week.
- Saturday is the last day of the week.
Adjectives of number answer the question: how many?
Adjectives of number are of three kinds:
Definite numeral adjectives
Examples: one, two, three, first, second, third etc.
- We have two hands and two legs.
- Each hand has five fingers.
Indefinite numeral adjectives
Examples are: some, any, all, many, few, no etc.
- Few children turned up.
- There is some milk in the bottle.
Distributive numeral adjectives
Examples: each, every, either, neither etc.
- Neither answer is correct.
- Every child needs love.
