A verb must agree with its subject in number and person.

  • Incorrect: The quality of the mangoes were good.
  • Correct: The quality of the mangoes was good.

Here the actual subject is ‘the quality of the mangoes’ and not ‘mangoes’.

  • Incorrect: His proficiency in Indian languages are remarkable.
  • Correct: His proficiency in Indian languages is remarkable.

Two or more singular nouns or pronouns joined by and require a plural verb.

  • Incorrect: Gold and silver is precious metals.
  • Correct: Gold and silver are precious metals.
  • Incorrect: Fire and water does not agree.
  • Correct: Fire and water do not agree.
