Agreement of the verb with the subject – part I
A verb must agree with its subject in number and person.
- Incorrect: The quality of the mangoes were good.
- Correct: The quality of the mangoes was good.
Here the actual subject is ‘the quality of the mangoes’ and not ‘mangoes’.
- Incorrect: His proficiency in Indian languages are remarkable.
- Correct: His proficiency in Indian languages is remarkable.
Two or more singular nouns or pronouns joined by and require a plural verb.
- Incorrect: Gold and silver is precious metals.
- Correct: Gold and silver are precious metals.
- Incorrect: Fire and water does not agree.
- Correct: Fire and water do not agree.
