Kinds of Adjectives
There are several kinds of adjectives:
Adjectives of quality (Descriptive adjectives)
Adjectives of quality show the kind or quality of a person or thing. They answer the question: ‘of what kind?’ Examples are: coward, intelligent, brave, kind, honest, big, large, great etc.
- Mumbai is a large city.
- Winston Churchill was a great politician.
- He is a kind man.
Adjectives formed from proper nouns such as French, Indian, British, Finnish etc., are sometimes called proper adjectives. Note that proper adjectives are generally classified as adjectives of quality.
Adjectives of quantity
Adjectives of quantity show how much of a thing is meant. Examples are: some, any, much, little, many, enough, all, both etc.
Examples are:
- She didn’t eat much.
- He ate some rice.
- He has lost all his wealth.
- He didn’t eat any rice.
Adjectives of quantity answer the question: ‘how much?’
