Form: subject + is / am / are + ing form of the verb

  • It is raining.
  • We are waiting.
  • They are playing.
  • She is writing.

The present continuous tense is often used to talk about a future action that has already been arranged.

  • We are going to Mumbai tomorrow.
  • He is arriving tomorrow.

Notes

There are a few verbs that are not normally used in the present continuous forms. Examples are: think, know, want, suppose, understand, remember, trust, agree, hear, see, smell, wish, desire, love, hate etc.

  • I think you are right. (NOT I am thinking you are right.)
  • I know I am wrong. (NOT I am knowing I am wrong.)
