The subject and the predicate
We have already seen that a simple sentence has only one subject and one predicate.
The subject refers to the person or thing about which something is said. The predicate is what is said about the subject.
- The girls danced. (Subject – the girls; predicate – danced)
- The boy wrote. (Subject – the boy; predicate – wrote)
- The chief guest inaugurated the function. (Subject – the chief guest; predicate – inaugurated the function)
From the example sentences given above you can see that the subject may consist of one word on several words. In the same way the predicate may also consist of one word or several words. But the subject must have a noun or pronoun in it and the predicate must have a verb in it.
Different kinds of subject
The subject is always a noun or a group or words that does the work of a noun.
- We are coming. (Pronoun)
- To err is human. (To-infinitive)
- The rich must help the poor. (Adjective)
- Singing is his passion. (Gerund)
