Affect and Effect
Affect is a verb. It means ’cause a change in somebody or something’. Affect can also mean ‘influence’.
- The tragic experience affected him deeply.
- The cold weather affected the crops.
Effect is usually used as a noun. It means ‘result’ or ‘change’. Note that the phrase ‘have an effect on’ means the same as ‘affect’.
Compare:
- The cold weather had an effect on the crops.
- The war had a serious effect on the price of oil.
