Affect is a verb. It means ’cause a change in somebody or something’. Affect can also mean ‘influence’.

• The tragic experience affected him deeply.
• The cold weather affected the crops.

Effect is usually used as a noun. It means ‘result’ or ‘change’. Note that the phrase ‘have an effect on’ means the same as ‘affect’.
