Among and between
Between is used when the reference is to two or more clearly separate people or things. Among is used when the reference is to a group of people or things which we do not see separately.
- The mother sat among her children. (Here we are talking about a group of children.)
- The Nile is among the longest rivers in the world.
- The merchant divided his property among his sons.
- You should settle this matter among yourselves.
- The letter Y comes between X and Z.
- The Mediterranean Sea is between Europe and Africa.
- We should be able to distinguish between right and wrong.
Notes
It is wrong to use to after between. Use and instead.
The interview will be held between 2 pm and 4 pm. (NOT The interview will be held between 2 pm to 4 pm.)
