Beside and Besides
Students are often confused about the meaning and use of these two words.
Beside means ‘by the side of’. Besides means ‘in addition to’.
- We have a house beside the river. (by the side of the river)
- He stood beside me. (He stood by my side.)
- He plays tennis besides (in addition to) football and cricket.
- Besides being a good writer, he is an excellent actor.
