Beside means ‘by the side of’. Besides means ‘in addition to’.

  • We have a house beside the river. (by the side of the river)
  • He stood beside me. (He stood by my side.)
  • He plays tennis besides (in addition to) football and cricket.
  • Besides being a good writer, he is an excellent actor.
