Countable and Uncountable Nouns
Nouns are also classified as countable and uncountable.
Countable nouns
Countable nouns are the names of people or things that we can count. Examples are: book, pen, apple, boy, sister, doctor, horse, dog, river, tree etc.
Countable nouns have plurals and they can be used with numbers and the article a/an. We can say a book or books, a dog or dogs, an apple or apples.
- We bought some apples.
- There is a cat on the roof.
Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns are the names of things which we cannot count. Examples are: water, ice, rice, milk, air, honesty etc. Uncountable nouns usually denote substances and abstract ideas. They do not have plurals and cannot be used with numbers or articles.
